This is a timeless classic and one of the most popular Bossa Nova standards that Antonio Carlos Jobim wrote, but most people don't play the original chord changes in the Bridge. The standard changes that most people play are a set of 2-5-1's in F and Eb (Gmi7-C7-Fma7 and Fmi7-Bb7-Ebma7). But the ORIGINAL changes are C7sus -C/Bb-Ami7 instead of Gmi7-C7-Fma7; then same with the next 2-5-1 sequence: instead of Fmi7-Bb7-Ebma7 = Bb7sus-Bb/Ab-Gmi7.
In fact, we weren't initially planning on playing this tune this tour. But Luther heard my solo piano recording of "Wave" (which you can hear HERE). and said 'this is a nice performance, BUT I don't think those are the original chord changes.' So Luther sent me the original chord changes to this tune, and we played it a few nights later during this special performance in Scottsdale, AZ at the Ravenscroft along with the great Dom Moio on drums. The full performance is OUT NOW where you can see more how we approach playing over these chord changes. This is the first cut to be released from this trio performance featuring my mentor Luther Hughes, long time bassist for Gene Harris, Horace Silver, Joe Henderson and Carmen McRae, among others. Stay tuned for more from this very special night! |
