Double time feel is common on a ballad, but rarely do you see double time feel and a metric modulation from a 4-based meter (4/4 or 2/4) to a 3-based meter (6/4 or ¾).
What makes solo piano so fun is that freedom to try things and spontaneously change directions in a way that you would not be able to with the constraints of a live rhythm section. This metric modulation was not something pre-planned going into this performance, but because I was feeling the eighth of the triplets so heavily, that spontaneously led to: "what if I make that the new quarter note?" Allowing yourself to go wherever your ideas take you can be scary at first, but that attitude of "let's see what happens” is what keeps your playing fresh and keeps the listener engaged. This is from a special LIVE solo piano performance at Libretto in Paso Robles, CA on 5/15/24. To watch the FULL performance, CLICK HERE. |
