Listening goes both ways! And when you feed each other ideas, it creates a musical conversation. Here are 3 ways to connect with the drummer in your jazz solos:
1) Let the Drummer Feed You Ideas Check out how Keith feeds Bijan this triplet idea with the cross-stick on the snare drum. Bijan then reflects that in his RH line, with these rolling triplets. 2) Feed the Drummer (w/ Rhythmic Figures) Keith hears Bijan's dotted quarters figure & reflects it tastefully on the snare. While Bijan's LH is punctuating dotted quarters, notice how the RH plays an eighth note + a quarter note which also creates the 1.5 beat effect. 3) Leave Space for the Drummer to Respond Leaving SPACE in between your phrases not only makes your solo more cohesive, but it also gives room for the drummer to respond. Note how Keith comments in the short space Bijan leaves after his phrase.
