When orchestrating a melody, you can use the SPACES of the melody to insert countermelodies. 2 Ways:
1) Use the top part of the LH (tenor voice) to play a counterline. 2) Another way, which Fred Hersch showed me, is to pass a line through the thumbs (à la Bach). So the counterline passes from the top of the LH to the bottom of the RH (aka tenor to alto voice). This excerpt is from my solo piano recording of "Desafinado" from Cactus Sessions.
