Check out how we orchestrate the melody to the bridge of "I'll Remember April". When playing at up-tempos, often times we may resort to a broken style. HOWEVER, even in a broken style, it's important to bring out the subdivisions so the listener can feel the time without the presence of bass & drums.
This can be accomplished in a few ways, via: 1) inner voice motions (i.e. #567 maj7 motion, 7-b7 min7 motion, 4-3 dom7 motion) 2) harmonic movements (i.e. chromatic approaches) 3) an active LH (i.e. the bassline lead-in) This excerpt is from my solo piano recording of "I'll Remember April" from Cactus Sessions.
