In this short lesson, I explain 2 REASONS why you MUST KNOW THE MELODY when comping for vocalists.
First, voicings - it will inform which top notes of your comping voicings are acceptable and not acceptable. You want to avoid half-step clashes with the melody at all costs and instead try to play something more neutral that fits with the melody tone. Second, fills - know where the spaces are in the melody because that is where you want to insert your fills, NOT when the melody is active. |
