A Pedal Point is a note that is repeated amidst changing harmonies. There are 2 kinds of pedal points, both of which can be seen used back to back this 4 bar excerpt of "Body and Soul" (Bars 31-32 of the end of the 1st chorus into bars 1-2 of the start of the 2nd chorus).
1) Inverted Pedal: is when the pedal point is in the TOP voice. 2) (Bass) Pedal: when people loosely refer to a "pedal" without specifying, odds are they are referring to a bass pedal. This is the most common form of a pedal, where the pedal point is in the BOTTOM voice. Excerpt from BODY AND SOUL (SOLO PIANO) as played by Bijan Taghavi at 2/25/23 Solo Sessions @ Dan's Studio in Cave Creek, AZ. To watch the FULL CUT, click HERE. |
