Building a jazz solo is all about creating tension-release. Typically when we think of tension-release, we think of harmony. But there are many more ways to create tension-release as well, texturally and rhythmically as you will see here in this improvisation excerpt over "East of the Sun":
1) Pitch Set: Single Note "G" then expanding into a larger pitch set 2) # of voices: 2-note RH colors RELEASE into cluster voicing 3) Harmonic: Sidestep 2-5 4) Form: by continuing a motif not only over the barline but THROUGH the start of a section 5) LH Undercurrent: breaking up LH stride (alternating between broken & quarter-note pulse) 6) Rhythmic: i.e. creating tension with a constant flow of triplets and then resolving This excerpt is from "East of the Sun" from Solo Sessions Vol. 2 recorded in Jan 2024. |
