3 Tips When Composing an AABA Tune

3 things I like to keep in mind while writing an AABA tune like this:
1) The 2nd A can be a repeat of the first A, but give it at least a different undercurrent like a bassline underneath. 2) The Bridge is what makes the tune! Thelonious Monk once said “the inside of the tune is what makes the outside sound good”. Don’t neglect the Bridge! 3) The last A has to pay off somehow - make it go somewhere different. Do not have it just be a literal repeat of the prior A’s. Another harmonic avenue, a twist to the melody or the form, modulate to another key, something! |
