When telling a story, it's important to develop your ideas to maintain a cohesive flow. Melodic Motifs are a powerful way to develop your ideas whereby we modify the notes to fit over each chord while maintaining the melodic shape.
Check out how we adapt this melodic shape that I call the "Duke Ellington Turn" to fit over multiple changing chords on "Ask Me Now". TIP: with this shape, I like to anticipate some chords by starting a beat early to create forward momentum and rhythmic interest. Otherwise, starting on beat 1 every time can sound rigid. |
