After you finish your rubato intro, you still have to "set the band up". To set the band up means just that, which most importantly is rhythmically you have to make the time and tempo crystal clear so the band knows exactly where to come in.
We can achieve this by bringing out multiple subdivisions. This is a concept I teach in my studies called "GROOVE PATTERNS" whereby we take a voicing and break it up in such a way that brings out multiple subdivisions: (i.e. 5-1 on &4 and beat 1, and then the rest of the chord on the &1 - this establishes a nice balance of clear downbeats and swinging upbeats). Check this out over the last 4 bars leading into the top of "Days of Wine and Roses" as played 7/27/23 at Campus JAX (Orange County, CA) as part of the TrioGram II ft. Joe LaBarbera CA Tour. |
