How to Create Rhythmic Tension in 3/4

Fred Hersch always stressed to me the importance of thinking of 3 in 4 and 4 in 3 to create rhythmic tension.

In 3/4 time signature, we can superimpose phrases in 4 to create over the barline phrasing.

Here are 2 ways to superimpose 4 over 3:
1) Half Notes
​2) Phrases in 2 (eighth-eighth-quarter)
