From: TrioGram II ft. Joe LaBarbera CA Tour (7/27/23 at Campus JAX in Orange County, CA)
Maestro Joe LaBarbera & Bijan Taghavi share a special duo moment together on "Angular Dissent" (comp. Will Lyle). Piano + Drums is the rarest duo of them all, but as a texture WITHIN a tune is a cool way to create drama. It takes a high level of empathy to pull it off, but it can be done when listening to each other. Notice here that it is less of a "solo" + "accompaniment" but moreso 2 musicians having a conversation with each other. Also, notice one person is not following the other for time; rather we are both keeping "THE” time. You can play "messy” runs in your RH, but your LH has to still be solid in grounding the time. Just like in the last video, here again we see the power of Dotted Quarter Notes. Dotted Quarters are not only a great way to link up with the drums but also a great way to END FORMS as it creates tension that then RELEASES at the top of the form. |
