Once at a lesson with Fred Hersch, I asked him how can I get a more full sound out of the piano when playing solo piano?
He told me something that may seem so obvious, but was a breakthrough in my playing that has stuck with me to this day. He said the reason you are not getting a full sound out of the piano, is because you're not playing any chords with 2 hands. Even when playing in a stride piano style, where the LH and RH each have their separate roles, there are parts where the hands can come together. Check out this excerpt of "I Should Care" and notice how we can fill out the chord with the bottom part of the RH to create a full sound out of the piano. |
