Dotted Quarter Notes is a great way to link up with the drummer. You can be creative with your usage of dotted quarter notes in your solo - “Dotted Quarters” isn't limited to just holding a single note for 1.5 beats. Notice how we can play 2 eighth notes + 1 eighth rest to achieve the 1.5 beat effect. Not only do Dotted Quarter Notes link you up with the drums, but it also creates tension-release within your solo. In this excerpt over "Have You Met Miss Jones", after a whole A section of dotted quarters, the release to regular time feels so much sweeter. There are other ways you can create rhythmic interplay too, but however you do it, rhythmic interaction is the fun of playing in a group setting. It's what makes playing with live players different from playing with a backing track or without a rhythm section. So when you get the opportunity to play with great players, make use of them!
