How can we create a sense of FLOW so our 3/4 playing doesn't sound RIGID?
1. Play THROUGH the Barline a) You should be able to play all 1/8th notes straight through without "restarting” your line every chord. b) Notice how this ascending 3rds motif is being carried THROUGH the barline. 2. Play OVER the Barline **Starting this motif on different beats helps blur the start of each barline. 3. Create Rhythmic Tension & Resolve it **You can play "messy” runs to build rhythmic tension, but you must always feel the underlying 3/4 pulse so you can LAND confidently on beat 1. As played by Bijan Taghavi on "Mixed Feelings" (comp. Altin Sencalar). From: 10/19/23 Altin Sencalar 4tet "In Good Standing" CD Tour @ Bop Stop (Cleveland, OH). |
