Once at a lesson with Fred Hersch, he stressed to me the importance of DANGER in improvisation.
“Danger” means that you are taking chances, like latching onto a quirky idea and following it through. Rather than just spitting out a bunch of pre-rehearsed licks, this dangerous level of spontaneity keeps your ideas fresh and the listener engaged. Sometimes he would even say… “just SPLASH AROUND”.
