Happy 80th Birthday to my biggest jazz piano influence, Maestro Kenny Barron! 🎹
They always say that the great improvisers remembered their ideas so they could repeat it later in their solos. Check out how we have a recurring idea at the start of both half-choruses over “I Should Care”. By having a recurring idea at the beginning of a chorus, this can create a cool effect of "theme & variations" and gives the listener something that they can cling on to. Kenny Barron is a master of this theme & variation approach. Check out his solo on "On A Slow Boat to China" from Final Concert 1990 where he uses the "Fried Bananas" Motif as a recurring theme at the start of nearly every half-chorus. |
