Check out how we can use our Broken Shells (aka Bud Powell LH) LH Comping Approach for Solo Piano to orchestrate the melody to "Have You Met Miss Jones".
Look for places where the hands can MEET to play 2-handed voicings - this is a great way to support the melody harmonically as well as rhythmically. If you begin to orchestrate the melody higher where the hands cannot meet, breaking up the shells can provide enough rhythmic support and the solo piano shell formation provides enough chordal support for a single note melody. In addition to breaking up the shells, inner voice motion (particularly on maj7#5 chords) can become useful for bringing out multiple subdivisions as well. |
