The Drums-Piano Rhythmic Connection is so important not just during a piano solo, but when comping for a soloist too. Check out these 2 ways we interact as a rhythm section while comping for Maestro Neck Pump's solo on "Black Nile":
1) Predictive: this hinges on listening to each other to be able to spontaneously catch rhythmic hits together 2) Reactive: this is where one member (in this case piano) starts playing a repetitive rhythmic pattern and the other member(s) hear it and join in. Check out how after 4 bars, Kofi (drums) catches onto my (piano) repetitive dotted quarter comping rhythm and joins in. Lucas (bass) joins in the fun too on this one! This is taken from the Bijan Taghavi 4tet at Cliff Bell's (Detroit, MI) on 12/8/22. Personnel: Allen Dennard "Neck Pump" (trumpet) Bijan Taghavi (piano) Lucas LaFave (bass) Kofi Shepsu (drums) |
