How to Play Fast Like Bud Powell

This Bud Powell Hemiola Lick is great to use when playing burning fast tempos like over "Cherokee".
1) It fits the hand well and works over several chords (not just Bbma7, but also Fmi7, Bb7, Ebma7 and even over Ab7 just 1 note is modified. Over C7 the riff is adjusted to start from A but with a similar shape.) 2) It creates a 3 over 4 hemiola effect which is a great way to break up the time and create rhythmic interest at fast tempos. Notice how the LH is also punctuating every 3 beats. In order to use this effectively you must always be aware of where beat 1 is so that you can resolve rhythmically. Now after building that rhythmic tension, releasing into a flow of eighth notes is a nice contrast.
