Stop Time is when the rhythm section stops playing time and instead accents, in this case, beat 1 every other measure. This is a fun way to break up a solo and propel the soloist with a different undercurrent.
What is essential when playing over stop time is to make the time CRYSTAL CLEAR so that the rhythm section knows when to come in with their hits. This can be achieved through in the pocket ideas - whether LH, 16th notes or eighth notes. See how I play over stop time in this piano solo excerpt over "Rosetta" from 7/27/23 at Campus JAX (Orange County, CA) as part of the TrioGram II ft. Joe LaBarbera CA Tour. |
