Check out this solo piano rubato intro to "Days of Wine and Roses" as played 7/27/23 at Campus JAX (Orange County, CA) as part of the TrioGram II ft. Joe LaBarbera CA Tour.
One approach to a rubato intro is to play off of the chord changes. Note how you don't have to restrict yourself to the original number of measures or beats per chord. Instead, follow your ideas and let your ideas dictate the number of beats or measures per chord. IMPORTANT TIPS: 1) don't just play chords, be sure to integrate melody as part of your rubato intro. 2) Try to lead your runs, arpeggios and melodies INTO the next chord. Once you finish your rubato intro, you must set up the band clearly. Stay tuned NEXT VIDEO to see how! |
