Check out how we make a metric modulation from 4/4 to 3/4 (actually, 6/4). Eighth note triplets in the old time become the "new" quarter note pulse. Jazz musicians often go into "double time feel” on a ballad. But rarely do they go to double time feel AND modulate to 3/4.
This metric modulation is not something I had planned on doing going into this take, but after feeling the eighth note triplet pulse for 2 measures, I thought to myself, "what if I made that the new beat (aka the quarter note)?" I don't know, but let's try it and see what happens!" That playful spirit is the beauty of solo piano -- solo piano affords you the freedom to spontaneously go in different directions, like changing the meter or even the key, unlike with a live rhythm section. |
