Comping Fill over "Just Friends"

When to insert fills? This would be too busy of a comping movement to play during the middle of the soloist's line. During the SPACES of the soloist is when you can "comment" (aka fill in the space).

How do you know where the spaces are if they are improvising a solo? The only way is by LISTENING deeply to the phrasing of the soloist.
