The solo section to Ahmad Jamal's "Crossfire" is modal, over a single chord: Cmi7.
Soloing over one chord is one of the hardest things to do in jazz improvisation - because you have to find ways to keep your improvisation engaging and create a solo arc over a single chord. Here are some devices used in this solo: 1) Chromatic Planing (taking 1 chord shape and moving it chromatically) 2) The “Big 4” (playing the McCoy LH 5th Bombs on Beat 4 gives forward momentum) 3) Alternating between Cmi7-Ebmi7 4) Chromatic Climbing 5) Triad Pairs (Cmin & Dmin) 6) Shifting Pentatonics (taking 1 pentatonic shape and moving it chromatically) 7) Rhythmic Displacement (3 over 4, with lines and chords) Personnel: Will Lyle (bass) Bijan Taghavi (piano) Juan Ale Saenz (drums) This is captured from TrioGram's Mexico Tour, from our performance 2/17/23 at El Convite (Mexico City, Mexico).
