What are Red Garland Block Chords? 🎹
This excerpt is from “Days of Wine and Roses” from TrioGram II CA Tour at the Black Cat in SF ft Joe LaBarbera (the last drummer for Bill Evans’ Trio)! Red Garland style block chords are not the same as Bill Evans style block chords. Bill Evans or George Shearing style block chords are locked hands or drop 2. Whereas Red Garland Block Chords refer to LH Rootless Voicings & RH Octave+1 in rhythmic unison. The +1 note is often a 4th or 5th interval, whatever fits the chord. This creates a big, full sound out of the piano and the effect of the piano sounding like a big band - “8 brass” where the LH is the 4 trombones and the RH is the trumpet section. |
