Classic Ending for Any Jazz Standard

The #4 ending is a classic ending that works for any jazz standard. It starts on the #ivmi7b5 and descends chromatically. But we add one twist: the biii chord is usually mi7, but here we made it biiidim7.
Sometimes you can just chord out this ending; here we are improvising lines through it. Over the final 2-5-1, we play a simple idea doubled in both hands. The idea works well as an ending line because it leads into the tonic of each chord. We also add 2 Extra Ending Chords: bII7 - IMaj7. Note how the top note is 3rd-#11. I prefer this contrary melodic motion as opposed to a parallel 3rd-3rd or #11-#11. |
