We often hear that we can use pentatonic scales in our improvisation to channel McCoy Tyner, including superimposing different pentatonic scales (like Emin pentatonic over Ami7).
But you will notice that just running up and down pentatonic scales (1, b3, 4, 5, b7) isn't going to get you that sound that you're after. The SECRET to getting that McCoy Tyner pentatonic improvisation sound in your playing is to simply add PERMUTATIONS (aka varying the order of the pentatonics). Check out how this is done in this solo excerpt on "Angular Dissent" (renamed "Angular Descent", comp. Lylac) from the TrioGram II. ft Joe LaBarbera Recording Session. "Angular Descent" is out NOW on Spotify, Apple Music and all streaming platforms. TrioGram II ft. Joe LaBarbera will be released in April 2024. |
