During the Head Out of "Have You Met Miss Jones", check out how we make a metric modulation from:
1) 4/4 to 3/4 (actually 6/4) and 2) from 3/4 (aka 6/4) back to 4/4 1) Quarter note triplets in 4/4 become the "new" quarter note pulse in ¾. TIP: repeating the rhythm that becomes the new quarter note can help you make the metric modulation & feel the new pulse. Notice (circled) how the quarter note triplet is played 12 times in a row; by playing it several times in a row that helps us feel the new pulse. 2) The dotted quarter notes in 3/4 become the quarter notes back in 4/4 time TIP: by repeating the dotted quarter notes several times in a row, it helps us make that metric modulation and feel it as the new quarter note pulse. This metric modulation is not something I had planned on doing going into this take, but the beauty of solo piano is that you can spontaneously go in different directions, like changing the meter or even the key, unlike with a live rhythm section. |
