Can you Learn to Play the Piano Online?
This is a common question, and the answer is both; yes and no. On a personal note, my expansion in jazz- in addition to learning from the greats- I attribute largely to two fantastic online sources, Justin Sandercoe at justinguitar.com and Scott Devine at scottsbasslessons.com. I was classically trained and introduced to the blues basics from my mentor, renowned concert pianist Robert Estrin. However, I was lacking that source of information and had many unanswered questions. This is where the online instruction provided by these gentleman helped me enormously in getting started. However there are some things you must be aware of.
Not all online content provides proper instructional, particularly for pianists and even moreso for the aspiring jazz pianist (which is why I am launching my series of instructional content for you all). Furthermore, online instruction lacks that one-on-one guidance. Also that pedagogue support and personal connection is lost, and many times questions go unanswered which can lead down to a pathway of frustration.
So in conclusion, can you learn to play the piano online? I don't think it's a great way to start learning the piano, however if you use online resources as a supplement to your regular instruction it can serve you wonders. Particularly with classical music, a private instructor is definitely the way to go. However, when you start opening doors into the field of jazz, schooling can only give you so much. Eventually, your "teacher" will become your favorite legends, and online resources can supplement you with a wealth of information!
